The Institute of Astronomy is pleased to invite expressions of interest from researchers who wish to apply for a Horizon Europe ERC Starting Grant to be held within the Institute.
The Starting Grant supports excellent Principal Investigators starting or having recently started their own independent research team or programme. A Starting Grant Principal Investigator should have already shown evidence of the potential for research independence, for example, by having produced at least one important publication as its main author or a publication without the participation of their PhD supervisor.
Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.
Eligibility information;
- Researchers of any nationality who have defended their PhD > 0 and ≤ 10 years prior to 1 January 2027, with a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal can apply.

The deadline for submissions through the European Commission’s EPSS portal is 4pm GMT on 14th October 2026.
