The Institute of Astronomy is pleased to invite expressions of interest from suitably qualified researchers who wish to apply for a Horizon Europe ERC Starting Grant to be held within the Institute.

The ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or program. Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.

Eligibility information;

  • Researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD, a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal can apply.

In the first instance applicants should make contact with a member of the Institute’s Academic Staff who has related research interests to discuss the possibility of hosting the ERC Starting Grant within the Institute.

Completed applications will have to be submitted through the European Commission’s EPSS system by 4pm GMT 14th October 2025, but we would expect interested applicants to contact a member of our academic staff as soon as possible, and at the very latest by 8th September.
