Coffee and Close

The three breakout sessions will enable discussions around the major science themes of Gaia. During these sessions the groups will aim to outline suggestions for networking activities around these science themes. These could include ideas for:
  • Conferences - thus with topics
  • Workshops
  • Exchange visits
  • Community building via joint  research programmes
  • (Need for) development of new techniques (multi-wavelength, multi-domain, computational)

Meeting Room Locations

The plenary sessions will take place in the Sackler Lecture theatre which is located in the main Hoyle Building of the IoA. The breakout sessions will be located as follows:
  • Group A: in the Sackler Lecture Theatre
  • Group B: in the Earth Sciences seminar room - see map - a three minute walk from the Hoyle
  • Group C: in the Hoyle Committee Room - located next to the Sackler in the Hoyle Building

Travel and Location

The meeting will be held at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge.

If you are travelling from the airports - I recommend pre-booking a taxi from one of the firms listed at http://www.cam.ac.uk/local/travel/taxis.html - i often use Blue Rose (bluerosecars@btinternet.com).

Information as to how to get to the IoA can be found at http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk/IoA/about_ioa/contact/directions.php

Accommodation

It would be good if you could arrange your own accommodation if needed for this meeting.
The Cambridge tourist office has an extensive accommodation page. Cambridge hotels are also listed.

The University of Cambridge have preferential rates at The Arundel, De Vere University Arms, and the Royal Cambridge Hotel. When booking please mention that you are visiting the University of Cambridge. The discounts offered seem to vary depending on how busy the hotel in question is at the time.

Acommodation queries

If you have problems with booking accommodation for this meeting or obtaining the preferential rates, please could you let Judith Moss know (jm at ast.cam.ac.uk), she maybe able to help.

Lunches and Dinner

Complimentary lunches and coffee/ tea will be provided during the meeting.

Important If you have special dietary requirements, please send an email to Nicholas Walton (naw@ast.cam.ac.uk) - with subject line: GREAT March 2009: Food Request - with your requirement (e.g. no nuts, vegan, no eggs, no diary etc). Please note that lunches will include a selection suitable for vegetarians.

We will organise a dinner for the evening of the Thur 26 March 2009 at The Fleur - see the Dinner page to sign up and for location details etc.

About Cambridge

We have provided a list of restaurants in Cambridge - please find this in reception. There is plenty of choice!

In terms of pubs - there is a list at http://www.cambridge-pubs.co.uk/ - the Castle on Castle Hill is the closest to the IoA.

Getting around Cambridge

  • Taxi stands are located at the railway station, bus station (Drummer Street) and Market Square in the city centre. The taxi stands are depicted with a white car on a blue square on the maps.
  • The bus station is located at Drummer Street.
  • The train station is located more than a mile to the south of the city centre. There is a regular bus service to Drummer Street bus station and the University West Site which is close to the Institute of Astronomy.
  • The IoA site is served by nearby buses, including the Uni 4 and Citi 4. Here is a map of local bus services, and timetables are available here.
  • There is a pleasant walk from the Institute of Astronomy to the city centre which takes about 30 minutes. This route is to cross Madingley Road, go down Clarke Maxwell Road, then take the Coton footpath to Adams Road, follow Adams Road, then Burrell's Walk, and finally down Garret Hostel Lane across the river into the centre of town.
