Abstract

Magnetic braking, a mechanism with which angular momentum is lost from the system, governs the evolution of binary stars such as cataclysmic variables (CVs) and AM Canum Venaticorum (AM CVn) stars, as well as regulates the spin down of single stars, like our Sun. However, a physical phenomenon governing such a braking mechanism has yet to be made. In this talk, I will present our physically motivated Double Dynamo formalism of magnetic braking, which explains the prominent features of CVs and AM CVns. In addition, I will touch upon how this model can be used to address the problem of stellar spin down.
