Talk Summary

Our Galaxy, like most big galaxies, harbours a supermassive black hole at its centre. Occasionally, these types of black holes swallow a huge amount of matter, grow very bright, and eject material through spectacular jets.  I'll share the story of how my colleagues and I pieced together different bits of evidence to show that this may have happened in our very own Galaxy a long time ago. Along the way, I'll share the amusing way that science research is sometimes reported by the media.
