The Institute of Astronomy is pleased to invite expressions of interest from suitably qualified researchers who wish to apply for a Branco Weiss Fellowship to be held at the Institute.
Branco Weiss Fellowship's support outstanding postdoctoral researchers from all scientific disciplines who are pursuing innovative, unconventional research ideas. The international fellowship provides up to five years of funding, enabling fellows to work independently at leading institutions worldwide while advancing their own research vision. In addition to scientific excellence, fellows are encouraged to engage across disciplines and communicate their work to wider society.
Eligibility for the fellowship is as follows:
- Open to researchers of all disciplines and nationalities; no biological age limits apply.
- Applicants must hold a PhD (or have passed their doctoral exam) obtained no more than 5 years before the application deadline.

In the first instance applicants should make contact with a member of the Institute's Faculty | Institute of Astronomy who has related research interests to discuss the possibility of hosting the fellowship within the Institute.

We ask that applicants secure support from a member of our academic staff, and then inform our administration of their intent to apply (by e-mailing fellowships@ast.cam.ac.uk) by 7th December 2025 at the latest.
- The final submission deadline is 5:00 PM CET on 15 January 2026. However, to allow time for internal review and checks, we ask that a completed application be available at least five working days in advance
