Animation of Galaxy Formation

This animation the evolution of the galaxy from z=1 until z=0.37, that is, from a time when the galaxy is first born until 2,200 Million years later. We are looking at the galaxy face-on and the different colours represent different densities of stars this box is 20 kpc across which is about 60,000 light years (2/3 the size of our own Milky Way galaxy).
