100th Nottingham (1st Notts) Sea Scout Group

Welcome to the WWW page of our Scout Group.

We are a group of between 15 and 20 boys and girls aged between 10 and 16. We are based in Dunkirk, Nottingham and although we are about 3 miles out from the City Centre we are classified as Inner City because of the area the majority of our Scouts come from. We are very good at retaining our Scouts and keeping them involved as they grow up by providing a different style of program for the over-14's within the same Troop structure. As this seems to work and there are no Venture Units close by we have extended the upper age limit for our Scouts to 18. This is a photo of some of the uglier members of our Troop shortly after a St. George's Day Parade.

We are very fortunate in having a Scout Hut, The Masthead, that borders onto a canal and we have a slipway for direct water access. We also have a river base, T.S. Avalon, on an island on the River Trent which we share 50/50 with the 2nd Beeston Sea Scout Group. Here is a picture of our hut and landing stage on the island.

We can access the island by water from The Masthead travelling up the canal and through Beeston Lock onto the Trent. We have a number of boats for transporting Scouts between the two sites including the one in this picture which shows the author of this page doing his cool Scout Leader look.

We also take part in parades through the City as part of our recruitment. This picture shows our float in the Nottingham University Karnival Procession through the City centre.

History of the 1st Notts Sea Scouts

We are still pursuing this one. We have records dating back to 1920 when the troop won a trophy for seamanship so we assume they must have been running for at least a couple of years prior to that. It was set up by Colonel Jardine in part of what is now the Broadmarsh Centre in Nottingham city centre. At some point a Training Ship called T.S. Avalon was aquired and although that has long since sunk we now call our island base after it. We know that some 35-40 years ago Baden-Powell's grandson was a leader with the Troop. It is minuted in the Leaders' meetings reports and we recently had a visit from somebody who was a Scout in the Troop at the time. We are actively researching the date of formation of the Troop as there is every possibility that this was one of the very first Sea Scout Troops. If anybody is able to assist us in finding out more about the history of the Troop we would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Contacting us

You can us email at jsb11u@cs.nott.ac.uk.

If any Scout groups are interested in camping on our island, which makes an excellent base for water activities and also hikes as it is in the middle of a nature reserve, please email me at the above address. It may be possible to have our Scout Leaders present for the camp but otherwise it is imperative that you have qualified Scout Leaders/helpers (i.e. Form W holders) in attendance.
