The Hitomi X-ray Observatory was launched on February 17 and lost on March 26th. In the meantime its Soft X-ray Spectrometer, a microcalorimeter operating at 50 mK, spent 3 days observing the Perseus cluster and measuring the velocity broadening of the hot intracluster gas to a precision of 10 km/s. This is one to two orders of magnitude better than achieved before and briefly opened the door on high resolution X-ray spectroscopy of extended objects.
