Feedback from star formation is central to cosmological models of galaxy formation and evolution. Tuning the feedback prescription so that simulations reproduce the observed properties of the galaxy population have provided much insight into which galaxies may lose significant amounts of metals and gas via galactic winds. The new challenge comes in testing these recipes against empirical measurements of outflowing gas. I will present the demographics of galactic outflows, review the challenges of measuring physical properties of the winds, and compare the results to
wind velocities and mass-loading parameters adopted in cosmological simulations. We have also detected inflowing gas in these data, and I will discuss its origin.
