A key question concerning the evolution of galaxies within the
concordance cosmological framework is how this evolution is modulated by
the broader environment of a galaxy, i.e. the interaction of galaxies
with their dark matter haloes, and the location of galaxies within the
cosmic web of large-scale filaments and voids in the Universe. I will
present new results from an observational survey of galaxies in groups
on the dependence of galaxy properties on halo mass and large-scale
environmental density, and a comparison with hydrodynamical numerical
simulations that guide us towards an understanding of the physical
processes that shape the galaxy population that we observe today.
