Previous Princely Provenance

Thanks to the detective work of historian of astronomy, Gustav Holmberg of Lund University in Sweden, we have identified a famous previous owner for one of our books.

The book is by the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, and dates from 1602, the title is Astronomiae instauratae progymnasmata.  On the title page is a faint stamp (or very neat handwriting) with "Ex Bibliotheca Friderici Henrici Princeps Auriaci".  Holmberg has found another book with this inscription, and identifies the owner as Frederik Henrik, Prince of Orange (1584-1647).  Frederik was the ruler of Holland from 1625 until his death.

Our book also bears the stamps of the Duke of Norfolk, and the Royal Society of London, so it is no stranger to distinguished ownership!

Of particular interest to astronomers, the book shows Tycho's observations of the Supernova of 1572, which is often called Tycho's Supernova.
