New Books for November

Neptune display at CAA Star Party

This years Cambridge Astronomical Association (CAA) Star Party on Friday 28 October will have a Neptune theme

At the event the IoA Library will be mounting a small display of books and pictures to commemorate the 1st Year of Neptune since its discovery in 1846 and near-discovery in Cambridge!

New Books for October

The following new books will be put on display in the Hoyle Building library area at the start of October.   If you would like to request any of these books, please write your name on the clipboard underneath the display and the book will be supplied to you at the end of the month.

 

Visitors from Société Astronomique de France

Today we welcomed 40 visitors from the Société Astronomique de France.  They were first met by Lord Rees and then went on a tour of our facilities.  The tour was led by librarian Mark Hurn and included the historic telescopes and library.  The tour finished up with a group photo, including our Director, Professor Rob  Kennicutt, next to the statue of Fred Hoyle.

Open Observatory: Open Cambridge Event 10 September 2011

Two tours of the Institute of Astronomy, including historic telescopes and Observatory building, were made attracting a total of 33 people.  There was also a small Library display of books and photographs illustrating the life of American astronomer Simon Newcomb.

Facebook group for Library

We have today created a new group on Facebook the 'Institute of Astronomy Library Appreciation Group' we aim to increase awareness of the work of the Library and increase appreciation of its collections.  Anyone with an interest in the Library (or astronomy in general) is welcome to join: Institute of Astronomy Library Appreciation Group.

Madras Observatory Papers, 1827

We have just scanned onto DSpace the lovely plates from the Madras Observatory Papers of 1827.  The plates show, studies of astronomers working with a pendulum experiment at the observatory, a map of Madras, and topographic views and charts of where the equator crosses the coast of Sumatra.  The binding of the book is in poor condition and we hope to have it repaired soon.  The plates can be seen at DSpace
