A New Technique to Find Clusters of Galaxies in the XMM-Newton and Chandra Archive

We present a large survey of clusters of galaxies using a new technique that combines the high throughput of XMM Newton and the exquisite imaging quality of the Chandra observatory. We detect 436 new clusters in the archival dataset excluding known sources near the central pointing. A large fraction of the background AGN point sources are removed using this technique resulting in a very high sensitivity of between $10^{-16}$ and $10^{14}~\mbox{ergs}~\mbox{cm}^{-2}~\mbox{s}^{-1}$ for over 100 sq. degrees of the survey. We also demonstrate that the low end of the flux distribution quite clearly indicates strong evolution of the cluster luminosity function in agreement with previous findings. Future work will be to produce cosmological constraints from the sample. We also highlight some new findings in the study of the temperature distribution of the intracluster medium in individual clusters.
